about us

Our History

In 1936, Herbert 'Salty' Baker started a small pet store in the basement of his home in Rumford, RI. What began as a personal hobby became a place of local pet lovers to gather and purchase a variety of pets, namely tropical fish and birds. In 1959 George Baker, Sr. built a store at 865 Warren Avenue in East Providence where it still stands, although quite different than the original store.

Rumford Pet, a Rhode Island landmark for over 70 years, offers a huge variety of pets, foods, and supplies along with a team of dedicated and experienced staff to serve the pets and people of Southern New England. Rumford Pet also partners with several local rescue leagues and shelters to provide adoption days, where customers can adopt dogs, cats and small animals in need of good homes.
